Commission of Science in the City festival: “How?” exhibition and the Science in the City festival in September 2012. Duration: 10 mins (loop)

-hEx: inverting geometry is an interactive video and performance installation that explores the aesthetics and properties of auxetic materials. The installation was presented in two arrangements: either as a live interactive installation with performers, or as a video installation.

The two performers presented a looping set of movements, drawing on the visual architectures observed on a molecular level in auxetic materials. The performers in the physical space are translated into the virtual environment, which is projected in the space in real time. The performer’s virtual body affects the virtual environment, deconstructing and reconstructing those linear geometrical forms found within it. The scientific processes of molecular manipulation to innovate new materials are hereby recreated in this interactive installation.

“Their motion was all about the mathematical beauty underlying all physical structures and exposed the hidden science behind the ordinary which we do not always associate with the complex.”
